  • On the occasion of this very special anniversary, 2014 will see not only numerous events, but also a series of centennial editions. These products are a testament to Leica’s 100 years of innovation and dedication to excellence in photography since Oskar Barnack’s invention of the first Leica, “Ur-Leica” in 1913/1914. The first of these special centennial editions is the Leica S 'Edition 100'. This centennial edition comprises a Leica S (Typ 006) medium-format system camera and two of the most popular S lenses, both with a central shutter, offering exceptional versatility in a wide range of situations - the Leica Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH CS and the Leica Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH CS.

The Leica Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH CS is ideal as a standard focal length for many photographic applications. Its extreme speed and outstanding imaging performance guarantee outstanding results at all apertures and distance settings. The angle of view of the Leica Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH CS corresponds to that of a 24mm lens in 35mm format and opens up new creative horizons in image composition - in particular for architectural and landscape photography.

A particular feature of the centennial edition is the special engraving - the centennial logo - which appears on the body of the Leica S and on both S lenses. The products in this set are supplied in a Leica version of the Rimowa Topas Multiwheel Cabin Trolley in bright aluminum with high-quality inner compartment and thanks to its compact size, the case is ideal for use as hand luggage on flights. In addition when packed in the case, the camera and lenses are safe and sound - even when shooting on location under extreme conditions.

Please note: the individual items will not be available separately.

  • The next generation in the successful line, the Leica S offers increased imaging quality and sensor sensitivity, predictive autofocus, higher speed and improved handling. Numerous enhanced functions contribute to the camera's further acceleration and greater security of the professional photographic workflow.

    OUTSTANDING IMAGE QUALITY

The outstanding imaging quality of the Leica S is not attributable to any single system component. Every single component is optimized to perfection, but its true powers are shown by their interaction. Decisive proof of this can be seen in the 37.5 megapixel CCD image sensor, specially developed for Leica, with micro lens shift and an infrared filter, which - together with the extremely high performance of the Maestro processor - ensures that creative ideas always lead to outstanding images.

    SPEED

A fast processor alone is not enough to ensure high data throughput. You also need fast and large buffer memory. Boosting the Leica S's buffer to 2 GB means accelerated image processing across the board; however, its essential purpose is supporting long image sequences in continuous shooting mode. The Leica S can store up to 32 DNG files with lossless compression, or 28 uncompressed DNG files, at a full consecutive shooting speed of 1.5 fps, before the buffer is filled. In JPEG mode, the length of the consecutive shooting sequence is only limited by the capacity of the memory card.

    VERSATILITY

The new Leica S was developed in cooperation with professional photographers to meet their requirements. Besides image quality, reliability, and ease of use, the focus was on photographic versatility. A dust and spray water protected camera body, the dual shutter system consisting of a focal plane and central shutter, and an extended ISO range for perfect adaptation to existing light, form the basis of the large range of photographic applications that the new Leica S masters: from advertising photography, through fashion, photo journalism, to nature and travel photography.

    ERGONOMICS

The Leica S combines the dimensions of a 35mm SLR with the imaging quality of the medium format. Thanks to its ergonomic handgrip with improved anti-slip characteristic, the Leica S rests perfectly in your hands. Its center of gravity is positioned so as to prevent fatigue while you are working, as the camera is lighter than professional 35mm DSLRs at just 1260g (2.8 lbs.) (including battery) despite having an extremely robust magnesium body. In comparison with traditional medium-format system cameras, where a digital element had to be combined with an existing analog camera, the Leica S has the enormous advantage that all its components are perfectly placed. The result: perfect ergonomics.

    INTUITIVE CONTROLS

When you hold a Leica S in your hands, you find the controls exactly where you expect them to be. Its layout and design, similar to that of a classic 35mm SLR, ensuring intuitive handling in every respect, for instance by combining familiar elements like the shutter speed dial with state-of-art controls. Everything about the Leica S is dedicated to providing photographers with all the options they need for a spontaneous style of work.

    CONCENTRATION AND MINIMIZATION

Although a digital system camera offers numerous functions and settings, everyday professional photography demands one thing in particular – the ability to concentrate on the picture you want. With this in mind, Leica developed an incomparably intuitive operating concept for the S that relies on an absolute minimum of control elements. The central controls on the Leica S are the shutter speed dial, the click wheel and the 5-way button, which can be reached comfortably with your right thumb. These controls allow the photographer to adjust the exposure setting and navigate the menus. In a nutshell: anyone holding a Leica S in their hands for the first time can rely completely on their intuition when getting to know its extensive range of functions. In fact, it sets entirely new standards in user-friendliness.

  • The high performance standard lens

The Summarit-S 70 mm f/2.5 ASPH. plays the role of the standard lens in the Leica S-System lens-portfolio, and has a focal length corresponding to 56 mm in 35 mm format. In order to ensure its universal versatility, the Leica design engineers invested immense effort to guarantee superior image performance at maximum aperture and at all focusing distances.

One of the eight lenses arranged in six groups features an aspherical surface, to minimize aberration effects. The two cemented elements are manufactured from glass with high anomalous partial dispersion, minimizing the effect of chromatic aberrations. In addition, glasses with very high refractive indices work together with the aspherical element to almost completely eliminate monochromatic aberration effects. In order to achieve perfect image performance from infinity to its minimum focusing distance of just 50 cm (~1.6 ft), the last two lenses are constructed as a floating element that moves independently from the rest of the optical system when focusing. The Leica Summarit-S 70 mm f/2.5 ASPH. is ideally protected against water droplets and dust and features a protective neutral glass filter that is included as a parameter in its optical design.

The reward for the immense effort invested in its design and construction is a lens with extraordinarily good contrast performance wide open and at all other apertures that, even at its closest focusing distances, can be only marginally improved in the extreme corners of images by stopping down. With a value of only 1.2%, distortion remains imperceptible, and maximum vignetting of 1.4 stops at maximum aperture is so extremely low, ensuring that the Leica Summarit-S 70 mm f/2.5 ASPH. delivers consistently dependable and superior image performance at all apertures and distances.

This is the CS version of the lens, which has a central shutter, also known as a leaf shutter, built-in. The central shutter allows the S camera to sync with a flash unit at any shutter speed up to and including 1/1000th of a second. This provides the photographer with exceptional control when balancing ambient and strobe lighting.

  • Broaden Your Horizons

The Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH. is equivalent, in 35 mm format, to a 24 mm super-wide-angle lens with a correspondingly expansive field of view. This, and its very fast initial aperture, makes it an ideal lens for exploring the enormous creative potentials of unusual perspectives and selective planes of focus.

When constructing super-wide lenses, immense effort must be invested to keep aberrations such as distortion or vignetting as low as possible. Five of the thirteen lenses arranged in nine groups have anomalous partial dispersion, and three of these are fluoride lenses with particularly low dispersion (colour scattering) characteristics for the correction of chromatic aberration. Two lenses are also elaborately manufactured with aspherical surfaces.

Rear-group focusing ensures consistently outstanding image performance throughout the entire focusing range and no change in the length of the lens when focusing. On top of this, its special construction provides effective protection against water droplets and dust.

Just like all other S-Lenses, the Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH. is designed and constructed for maximum contrast rendition at maximum aperture, an attribute that can only be increased very slightly, and only in the extreme corners of images, by stopping down. For a lens with such a wide angle of view, its very low vignetting of only 1.5 stops and distortion of only 2.8 % (both at infinity) is negligible in practical use. Thanks to its superior imaging qualities, the creative potential offered by this super-wide-angle lens can be exploited to the full without compromise.
