Leica Lounge with Andrew Kaufman | Thurs, Jan 12, 2017 | 7pm - 8:30pm
Join us in the Leica Lounge on Thursday, January 12, 2017 with photographer Andrew Kaufman. Andrew will discuss his latest book, The Isthmus, which chronicles his decade-long project to document the people and places shaped by the construction of the new Panama Canal.
Begun in 2004, Kaufman’s quest to document Panama’s transformation has taken him to all corners of Panama, from the Pacific entrance of the canal (under the Bridge of the Americas) to Panama City’s gleaming high-rise neighborhoods to the slums of Chorillo, Curundu and beyond. The Isthmus is two stories, one of Panama and the other, El Canal. The project will culminate with the official opening of the canal and the completion of Kaufman’s 10+ year photographic odyssey.

Andrew Kaufman is an artist that doesn't fit the mould of many of his contemporaries. He produces a tremendous amount of personal work, in every photographic format imaginable, and is really someone impossible to categorize. One day he might be shooting 6x7cm for an ad client and the next 4x5" for a personal project. He has worked for magazines, agencies, art directors, ad clients and collectors and has somehow managed to avoid the mass homogenisation of imagery that now seems to be prevalent in those fields.
