  • Valparaíso, Chile Street Photography Workshop with Eléonore Simon

If we walk up and down all the stairs of Valparaíso we’ll have
walked all around the world.” - Pablo Neruda

Leica Store Miami and the Miami Street Photography Festival are excited to announce a new street photography workshop in Valparaíso, Chile with Eléonore Simon. Join us as we explore this vibrant city’s flourishing street art, charming historic quarters and bustling street life. The Jewel of the Pacific is a gritty and lively seaport whose charm and poetry has captured the imagination of writers and artists time and time again. Come stroll the seaport’s narrow winding streets, steep stairs and brightly colored hillsides. Be inspired by the city’s rich history, unique energy, and its stunning views of the Pacific.

Your workshop instructor will be Valparaíso local and celebrated street photographer Eléonore Simon, who after living in New York for many years fell under the spell of this enigmatic seaport. Miami Street Photography Festival Director Juan Reyes and Leica Specialist Peter Dooling from Leica Store Miami will be on hand to give assistance and advice as you photograph the streets of this amazing city.

While Valparaíso is an incredibly photogenic city, in this workshop we’ll want to go beyond photographing the city’s picturesque scenes and undeniable charm to focus on developing your singular voice as a street photographer and visual storyteller.

The streets will be the canvas on which to develop and deepen your personal vision, and we’ll learn to see and capture beauty everywhere around us, from the most poetic corners of Valparaíso to the most mundane scenes. You’ll walk out of this workshop with a keen understanding of composition, of the effective use of light and shadow, and of the art of editing.

You’ll have a chance to learn from each other and from the works of a variety of artists in our class sessions. That said, we will want to spend as much time as possible shooting in the streets of Valparaíso and will therefore alternate days of class sessions with the entire group with days of individual reviews to discuss your work in progress.

We will be based out of the boutique hotel, Casa Galos Hotel & Lofts, located at the corner of Almirante Montt and Galos streets. It is situated in the heart of Cerro Alegre, Valparaíso's historic quarter and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Casa Galos was built in 1885 and was carefully refurbished and completely restored in 2012. It will be a perfect base to explore the rest of the seaport and an ideal location to unwind after a day of shooting.

    About Valparaiso

Valparaíso, the cultural capital of Chile, was once the most important merchant port of the Pacific coast of South America. It received constant influences from around the world which are still visible in its urban make-up and in the beautiful examples of late 19th century architecture throughout the city.

You will be exploring Valparaíso in November, at the end of the Chilean spring,  when you should expect comfortable temperatures ranging from 52°F to 64°F (11°C to 18°C). The climate is normally dry at this time of the year with the sun shining most days (although there may be occasional morning fog). Please bear in mind that since Valparaíso is a coastal town, you should expect variations in apparent temperatures throughout the day, as the sun can feel unexpectedly hot and evenings occasionally bring chillier winds from the Pacific. Therefore, we recommend layering for this trip, and of course it is always best to bring a light rain jacket as a precaution.

To make the most of this workshop, expect to be climbing up and down hills and many sets of stairs. Though we’ll also be shooting in flatter terrain, Valparaíso’s charm lies within its beautiful hillsides so come prepared with comfortable shoes!

    About Eléonore:

Eléonore Simon is a French-American photographer currently residing in Valparaíso, Chile.

After obtaining her master’s degree in art history, Eléonore moved to New York and fell in love with street photography. There, she worked as a studio manager and served as a teaching assistant at the International Center of Photography.

Her work has been exhibited in the United States and in London and has received multiple awards, including the Magenta Foundation's Flash Forward Emerging Photographer Competition and the Latin America Fotografia Award. She was also a speaker at Street London and at the Miami Street Photography Festival.

Her photography offers an aesthetic and mysterious representation of the world: unusual camera angles, stark shadows and graphic elements create an abstracted depiction of urban life. To learn more about Eléonore and view her work, visit her website: http://www.eleonoresimon.com/

Further information on transportation options to Valparaíso from the Santiago de Chile airport (SCL) will be provided closer to the workshop date. In the early evening, we’ll meet at our hotel and head together to our welcome dinner at a local restaurant where we’ll have a chance to get to know each other and start getting excited about the week to come!

    Day 2 (Saturday, November 16)

Morning (classroom): This morning, Eléonore  will provide a class introduction and present her own black and white photographs of Valparaíso, as well iconic works produced in the city and some lesser-known gems. This will also be an opportunity to get to know you better as photographers by looking at some of your work (please plan to bring 10 to 15 of your own images for the first day of class).

Afternoon (shooting): We’ll ease into the workshop by shooting next to our accommodations, in the colourful hills of Cerro Concepcion and Cerro Alegre. Quaint houses, charming funiculars and beautiful views, these neighborhoods at the heart ot the historic center are what most people imagine when thinking about Valparaíso.

    Day 3  (Sunday, November 17)

Morning (shooting): We’ll start the day at the lively fish market in Caleta Portales, before walking along the Valparaíso bay.

Afternoon In the afternoon, we’ll leave Valparaíso to shoot in the nearby city of Viña del Mar, one of Chile’s most popular beach resorts and a striking contrast to its gritty neighbor.

Early evening (individual reviews; 5-8 pm): During this window, each participant will have some time for an individual review with your workshop instructor to discuss your work in progress.

    Day 4 (Monday, November 18)

    Morning (shooting )

Today we will travel through narrow roads, steep slopes and beautiful hills to the Playa Ancha cemetery, a unique location overlooking the Pacific.

Afternoon (classroom): This afternoon we’ll meet together as a class and review the work from our participants.

Early evening (shooting): After our class, we will head out again to shoot, starting in downtown Valparaíso with the Plaza Sotomayor and the port neighborhood, before taking a charming funicular to Cerro Artilleria.

    Day 5 (Tuesday, November 19)

Morning (shooting): We will start the day by exploring Cerro Carcel, including the city’s former prison, now turned into a dynamic cultural center. Across from the cultural center are some South America’s most historic and beautiful cemeteries which also offer great views of the city.

Afternoon (shooting): We’ll spend the afternoon shooting in Cerro Bellavista, home to Pablo Neruda’s house. There, we’ll wander in the Museo a Cielo Abierto (“open-air museum”) and photograph the vibrant murals in the largest collection of street art in Chile.

Early evening (individual reviews; 5-8 pm): During this window, each participant will have some time for an individual review with your workshop instructor to discuss your work in progress.

    Day 6 (Wednesday, November 20)

Morning (independent shooting): This morning you’ll have time for some independent shooting. You’ll be free to revisit neighborhoods of interest, or discover new ones (your instructor can advise you based on your work in progress).

Afternoon ( classroom): We will be processing, editing and sequencing work in the afternoon for our final slideshow.

Evening: We will start the evening on a high note with the participant’s final slideshow! We will then head out to dinner as a group and celebrate an amazing week of shooting together.

    Day 7 (Thursday, November 21)

Depending on your departure time today, Eléonore will be available in the morning for a final individual review, should you like to discuss other projects you may have, whether you are working on a long term body of work or looking to edit a portfolio for your website.

After check-out, you will make your way back home or start your independent adventures in Chile or elsewhere in South America!
