  • What to expect

Paris is one of the world’s great cultural and historical destinations. The streets are rich in architectural elements, iconic monuments, and of course interesting people. Also known for its café culture, we’ll have ample opportunity to sample first-hand the famous cuisine and wines Paris has to offer.

We will be staying at the 4-star Lyric Opera Hotel in the 2nd arrondissement, which has plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. The rooms are modern, clean and comfortable. A wonderful French breakfast is served up each morning in the breakfast room. The Lyric Paris Opera Hotel is located in a quiet street near the magnificent Opéra Garnier, one of the most famous monuments in Paris, and is right in the centre of the City of Light. Famous Paris department stores Galeries Lafayette and Printemps are only a short walk away, as is the Neo-Classical Madeleine church. It's a perfect launching off point for our adventures around the city.

Paris in early June is usually very pleasant with the temperatures in the mid 60s °F to the mid 70s °F in the day. Evenings are often cooler, so plan on throwing on a light sweater or fleece later in the day. Rain is always a possibility in Paris, so a packable rain jacket is advisable. Comfortable sneakers or walking shoes are also a must as we will be doing a lot of walking during this workshop in search of great photographs.

    About Louis:

Louis Jay was born in Philadelphia in 1951 and his photography career has spanned more than 40 years. He started his interest in street photography as a young man in London in the 1970’s with his Leica M4 film camera. He decided to stay in London and ended up studying photography at the Harrow College of Art. After moving to New York City in 1978, he studied with the great documentary photographer, Lisette Model at Parsons School of Design.

He spent the next decades shooting editorial portraits, record covers and ad campaigns in an international career that included work in New York City, Rio de Janeiro and Miami. Throughout this period he has had several exhibitions and has taught photography at NYU, The Miami Ad School and Barry University in Miami.

Since selling his studio in Miami in 2011, Louis has stopped doing commercial work and has dedicated his energy to his first passion of street photography. In 2018 he published his first photography monograph, PASSING FANCIES, which was the result of over 3 years of shooting in some of his favorite places including Rio, Miami, Paris, Amalfi, and Sicily.  The Leica Store Miami exhibited PASSING FANCIES as a one man show in March, 2019. Louis will also be exhibiting these photographs at the Leica Gallery Porto in Portugal in January 2020.

Louis currently resides between Miami and Paris, where he spends his days photographing in the city of light.

Louis has been using Leica cameras since his early days in London, New York and Rio. He currently shoots with the Leica Monochrom, Leica M10, Leica Q2 and a Leica MP film camera.
