Southwest Ireland Monochrom Workshop
Join Leica Store Miami and fine art photographer Richard Sexton for an all-inclusive Monochrom workshop in scenic southwest Ireland. We'll journey to Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula, the Aran Islands, the Cliffs of Moher, Galway and more. Richard Sexton, a lifelong Leica photographer and a master of monochromatic printing, will be your instructor. Leica specialist Peter Dooling from Leica Store Miami will be the trip organizer and will give assistance and advice and help you get the most out of your Leica.
Craggy coastlines, lush forests, quaint villages, prehistoric ruins, castles, rolling hillsides, lively pubs, all steeped in a rich, complex history, make Ireland the perfect location for a destination workshop, particularly for black and white photography.
For all Ireland’s beauty, the weather can be challenging. Sunny days can suddenly be filled with windy drizzle. A cloudy, foggy day in Ireland is a normal day. But for those working in black and white, if you brave the mist you can come away with some truly dramatic, atmospheric imagery. This is the beauty of black and white photography: It is more subjective, more interpretive. And it requires a certain vision, an ability to interpret a reality rendered only through shades of gray. Light and shadow is the language of the image.
Black and white photography is not easy, nor is it merely color photography absent the color. It is a separate, challenging medium and Ireland is the perfect proving ground.
While other cameras (and color cameras) are certainly allowed on this trip, the focus is on Leica Monochrom cameras and learning how to get the most out of them. Current owners as well as those wanting to learn more about monochrome photography are encouraged to attend.

Why this trip is different
As a digital camera devoted solely to black and white capture, the Leica Monochrom produces files with an analog character and subject rendering that cannot be replicated by any color digital camera. It is a specialized photographic instrument that requires a unique approach when it comes to:
- Capture: Learn a unique way of seeing the world in black and white employing pre-visualization and a commitment to black and white imaging before the fact, rather than after.
- Color Filters: Learn how to use color filters to transpose color values to shades of grey which can improve your images at the time of capture.
- Post Production: Using Adobe Lightroom to optimize the grayscale raw file.

Itinerary (*locations subject to change)
Day 1 - Saturday, May 13: Arrival, Adare and Killarney
We'll meet at the Savoy Hotel in Limerick at Noon and start our journey to the popular town of Killarney. If you arrive early, the hotel will be happy to store your bags should you want to explore the city. On the way to Killarney we'll stop at Adare, one of the prettiest villages in Ireland. Walk along the main street which is lined with thatched roofed cottages or visit the old priory and monastery before departing for Killarney. After checking in to the 4-star Lake Hotel, you may want to explore the town or take photos along the lakeshore of Lough Lein (right behind the hotel), Killarney’s lower lake, with magnificent mountain and woodland views. We'll meet in the lobby at 5:00pm for a presentation by Richard and then head over to the hotel's Castlelough restaurant for dinner.
Overnight: Lake HotelDay 2 - Sunday, May 14: Ring of Kerry
Today you will discover the wonderful scenery of the famous Ring of Kerry. The road winds between the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Ireland's highest mountains, and the varied Atlantic coast. You will be amazed at the breathtaking views and interesting photo opportunities here, including the iconic Skellig Rocks. Continue around and visit Valentia Island, Derrynane House, Portmagee and much more. Travel through the remote villages of Cahirciveen and Waterville – one of Charlie Chaplin’s favourite places – and pass through the colourful village of Sneem and pause at Moll's Gap to view the Three Lakes of Killarney.
Overnight: Lake Hotel
Day 3 - Monday, May 15: Torc Waterfall, Muckross House & Gardens & Adobe Lightroom Session
Today we'll visit Torc Waterfall which offers many opportunities for photographs and then we'll stroll through Killarney Park to Muckross House & Gardens. Within the park there will be many scenes to photograph and the day is free for you to enjoy. Make your way back to the hotel for an Adobe Lightroom Session.
Overnight: Lake Hotel
Day 4 - Tuesday, May 16: Dingle PeninsulaFollowing breakfast we'll gather our bags and head to the Dingle Peninsula. Although not as well-known as the Iveragh Peninsula where the Ring of Kerry is located, the Dingle Peninsula is less busy but every bit as beautiful. The town of Dingle is a small fishing port where you will find plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants to have lunch. Then to the west of the town the scenery is particularly rugged with views out to the formerly inhabited Blasket Islands.
Overnight: Dingle Skellig HotelDay 5 - Wednesday, May 17: Dingle Peninsula
On this day, we'll take a morning boat trip to Great Blasket Island and photograph the coastline and some of the abandoned structures there. It was home to a small fishing community of Irish speakers until the island was abandoned in 1954, when living there became unsustainable.
You'll have some free time in the afternoon to explore and photograph the quaint town of Dingle, take a tour of the Dingle Distillery, and more.Overnight: Dingle Skellig Hotel
Day 6 - Thursday, May 18: Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and Galway
Enjoy an early breakfast at your hotel and board your coach to travel to County Clare crossing the Shannon Estuary by ferry. Once in Clare, enjoy the scenery as you travel to one of Ireland’s natural wonders, the Cliffs of Moher. The cliffs rise to 214 meters (702 ft.) at the visitor centre where the views are magnificent. Following the visit and lunch, travel through the karst like landscape of the Burren where there will be several photo stops. Finally, we'll arrive and check-in at our hotel in central Galway and meet for dinner that evening. If you're up for it after dinner, head out to experience Galway's lively music and pub scene.
Overnight: Harbour Hotel
Day 7 - Friday, May 19: Inis Mor (Aran Islands) and Galway
The Banshees of Inisherin, was mainly filmed on Inis Mor. The islanders still speak their native language but will have no problem in communicating in English. Return to Galway where the remainder of the day is free for independent sightseeing, shopping, etc.
Overnight: Harbour Hotel
Day 8 - Saturday, May 20: Clonmacnoise, Killaloe, Limerick.
After breakfast, we'll load up our bags and make our way to Limerick. We'll drive to the center of the country to visit Clonmacnoise. This early Christian monastic site was founded by St. Ciaran in 545 AD, when Christianity flourished throughout Ireland. We'll photograph round towers, church ruins and Celtic crosses with elaborate carvings, all in a picturesque setting on the banks of the River Shannon. After checking in to our hotel, we'll enjoy a farewell dinner in Limerick.
Overnight: Savoy HotelDay 9 - Departure
After breakfast, we'll say our goodbyes. Feel free to depart at anytime on May 21st.
