Why Florence

Join Leica Store Miami + Adam Marelli Workshops for a Leica photography workshop in Florence, Italy. Home to the most innovative creations of the Renaissance like Filipo Brunaleshci’s Dome, Michelangelo’s David and Rosso Fiorentino’s Deposition, the city has nurtured the development of artists for over five hundred years. With gorgeous light, winding cobblestone streets, magnificent architecture and friendly locals, Florence is a photographer's dream and the perfect location to hone your photography skills and come home with some amazing shots.

A wonderful range of architecture, street shooting, and portrait settings are all within walking distance. This is an excellent opportunity for photographers who want to remove guesswork from their photography and learn the real joys of using their Leica. In this three day workshop we will cover posing, environmental portraiture, composition, seeing light, camera technique, exposure, composition and post processing. We will explore the city as a backdrop, a muse and your own personal photographic studio.

What’s included

  • Four days of guided shooting around our favorite locations in Florence
  • A private shoot with a local craftsman
  • A session with professional models with one-on-one  instruction on environmental portraiture
  • Composition and lighting presentations by Adam Marelli that have been featured on B&H Photo Series, Petapixel and his upcoming Image Maker Series at the International Center for Photography
  • Group image review and critique with detailed feedback
  • Technical workflow instruction for Adobe Lightroom from Leica and processing expert David Farkas, who has 25 years’ experience in professional digital imaging and print making

What’s not included

Hotel, meals and transportation is not included. Because everyone’s needs are different, participants are free to make their own arrangements. Some might want to stay in a five star luxury hotel while others are fine with basic lodging. Florence has plenty of options that run the full gamut and we are happy to make any recommendations.

About Adam

Adam's approach to photo instruction is very different from the usual photo workshop. His foundation as a painter, sculptor and craftsman add tremendously to his photography experience and his ability to teach classical composition and lighting techniques. In the one-on-one critique sessions, Adam is direct, honest and extremely constructive (and sometimes downright hilarious), getting participants to reach a new level of self-reflectance in their photography. By the end of the workshop, you'll find yourself hearing his critiques in your head as you frame prospective images. As a result, in just a week you'll approach composition and image making from a new perspective and find yourself able to easily identify your strongest photos, while avoiding past mistakes.

About David

David grew up in a professional photo lab and has been behind the camera and in the darkroom since he was seven years old. In 1990, he started using Photoshop and was an early adopter of high-end film scanning, color management, pre-press and retouching, and later served as a consultant to Kodak in creating the first digital minilab. He takes a results-oriented approach to post processing, opting for a focus on maximizing image quality with as few steps as necessary. Join him as he strips away some of the common misconceptions surrounding image processing. With his workflow, David will show you how to unlock the full potential of your Leica digital camera, with the least amount of work.

What to expect

If you would like to know what to expect, just read these testimonials from past workshops:

“I did not really think it was possible. Try this: go to the British Museum, find a staircase with good light (it happens to be on the left as you enter the museum) stay there for 2 hours and take pictures and chat with people as they pass by.  If you are with Adam, very quickly it becomes a routine; find the light, take the pictures.

He has an uncanny ability to walk you through a scene and make you see the light. Along the way you get tips on adjusting your settings –  f-stop, shutter speed, exposure compensation, and such.

Suddenly, you are a much better photographer than before.  Interestingly, this realization will hit you when you start looking at your pictures on the computer and you will be proud of yourself for a few minutes, until you see Adam’s pictures.”

Jee Teck Tan,  Florence 2015

“The workshop in Prague brought me to a new level of photographic appreciation. Your criticism based on sound artistic concepts and comparison with masters like Cartier-Bresson were particularly enlightening, opening a path to more discerning evaluation on the interaction of light, subject and technique.  Street photography and portraiture were exciting discoveries, with challenging new environment and equipment.”

Carlos Bertoni, Prague 2013

“Adam offers participants an increased self-awareness on observation.  His approach focuses on a continuity of factors (in this case art and photography.) I found it influential not only as a photographer but also as an architect—perhaps a Renaissance approach. Something that in our contemporary lives is often ignored.”

Arturo Rojas,  Prague Workshop 2013
