  • Join Leica Store Miami for a special Fall Foliage photography tour of Western Colorado, as we capture the fleeting beauty of Autumn in the Rocky Mountains. We will visit famous ski towns like Aspen, Crested Butte, and Telluride, and explore their high mountain passes in search of breathtaking vistas that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Leica experts David Farkas, Peter Dooling and Colin McKinley from Leica Store Miami will be on hand to offer guidance and assistance as you capture the spectacular mountain scenery.

While other cameras are certainly allowed on this trip, the focus is on Leica camera systems and learning how to use them to their full potential. Current owners as well as those wanting to try Leica gear out for a week of real shooting are encouraged to attend. We’ll share our favorite tips and tricks so you can get the most out of this exceptional gear.

    Why this trip is different

At Leica Store Miami, we feel that real world shooting is the best way to discover the capabilities of your camera, grow as a photographer and enjoy the Leica experience. Our Leica-focused photo workshops offer you a one-of-a-kind opportunity to master your camera, try out the latest Leica gear and spend time with other Leica enthusiasts from all over the US and the world.

This is not a workshop where you spend most of your daylight shooting hours sitting in a classroom. Why travel to some of the most beautiful and picturesque locations just to be stuck indoors? Instead, we will focus on making the most of each and every day to capture as many great photo opportunities as we can.

    What to Expect

This is primarily a photography trip. We will be shooting some days from before sunrise until after sunset. At each carefully chosen location, there will be plenty of time to set up your tripod, compose your shots and get in some quality photography.

The weather and climate in Colorado’s high country is renowned for being extremely unpredictable, due to its extreme elevation and rugged terrain. This means conditions can change within minutes and miles, resulting in very dramatic light and photographic opportunities. Weather during the daytime can range from the high 70’s to low 30’s, with nightly lows sometimes dropping into single digits.  Snow is not uncommon this time of year, and can create excellent conditions for capturing unique and striking fall color photographs.

Our accommodations are all situated between 7,000 ft. and 9,375 ft. This extreme elevation can present visitors with certain challenges like shortness of breath, dehydration, dry skin, and lightheadedness. Especially for those coming from low elevations or sea level, we recommend arriving 1-3 days early to properly acclimate.

  • Itinerary

Day 1, Sept 27th: Denver to Aspen

The adventure begins with your arrival in the beautiful town of Aspen, Colorado, where you will meet up with your guides and fellow photographers for a welcome dinner. We recommend flying into Aspen Pitkin County Airport.

    Overnight: Inn at Aspen

    Day 2, Sept 28th: Aspen

This is where the real fun begins – Catch the first rays of sunlight on the famous Maroon Bells, the twin 14,000’ peaks that reflect over Maroon Lake to create one of the most stunning views in Colorado.  We will spend the morning here exploring different angles and compositions, allowing you plenty of time to find a unique perspective.

After returning to Aspen for lunch, we will spend the afternoon exploring some of the other scenic areas near town, including winding mountain roads and an abandoned “Ghost Town” that has been uninhabited for over 100 years.  Enjoy the striking mountain views, golden groves of Aspen trees, and all the incredible photographic opportunities that can only be found during Autumn in the Rocky Mountains.

We will end the day at a dramatic scenic overlook, capturing the colors of the sunset over some of the most striking peaks in Colorado.

    Overnight: Inn at Aspen

Day 3, Sept 29th: Aspen to Crested Butte

On the third day we will return to the Maroon Lake area and explore some different, lesser-known locations. If conditions were not perfect on Day One, this will be a second chance for you to capture the breathtaking vista of the Maroon Bells reflecting over Maroon Lake.

We will then return to Aspen and check out of our hotel, before driving to the ghost town of Crystal, Colorado. After an exciting ride on a bumpy mountain road (in 4x4 Jeeps driven by professional local guides), you will enjoy the opportunity to photograph one of the most spectacular and unique locations in Colorado: Crystal Mill. This wooden powerhouse has been perched on its rocky outcropping since 1892, when it was constructed to assist a nearby mining operation.

Time permitting, we will catch another sunset over the mountains from McClure Pass on our way to the small mountain town of Crested Butte, where we will spend the night.

Overnight: Lodge at Mountaineer Square in Crested Butte

Day 4, Sept 30th: Crested Butte to Ridgeway/Telluride

Prepare to be amazed on Day Four, as we venture high up into the mountains above Crested Butte and capture the sunrise from a high alpine lake near Kebler Pass.  Situated at over 10,000ft. above sea level, Kebler Pass is home to the world’s largest grove of aspen trees.  We will spend the rest of the day here, strolling through the aspen groves and marveling at the spectacular display of fall colors that make Kebler Pass so famous.

After the last light of day fades away over the mountain pass, we will continue traveling south to the luxurious Chipeta Solar Springs Resort in Ridgway, which will be our home for the remaining days of the trip.

Overnight: Chipeta Solar Springs Resort in Ridgway

    Day 5, Oct 1st: Ridgway/Telluride

On the morning of Day Five, you will experience one of the most dramatic panoramic views in the American West as we watch the sun rise over the San Juan Mountains from the Dallas Divide Summit.  With any luck, the vibrant fall colors will be at their peak, and a fresh dusting of snow will cover the summits of the distant mountains.

As the sunrise colors fade we will take a scenic drive up and over the mountains on Last Dollar Road, stopping at every opportunity to photograph the magnificent fall foliage which lines the jagged peaks.

At the other end of Last Dollar Road we will find ourselves in the town of Telluride, famously known for its world-class skiing and expansive views.  Ride the gondola up and over the slopes to the quaint Mountain Village, and enjoy lunch at a local brewpub.

We will end the day capturing the sunset over the San Juans, before retiring to our lodging at Chipeta Solar Springs in Ridgway.  Enjoy a soak in the luxurious hot pools, or in the private hot tub outside your room.

Overnight: Chipeta Solar Springs Resort in Ridgway

    Day 6, Oct 2nd: Ridgway/Telluride

On Day Six, we will have another opportunity to catch the first light on the San Juan Mountains from the Dallas Divide Summit, or another nearby vantage point.  We will then head out in the opposite direction from the previous day, exploring the views from a new perspective on the scenic County Road 7 through Uncompahgre National Forest.

After a quick lunch back in Ridgway, we’ll venture up our third and final mountain road to catch the Sunset over the San Juans from a new angle.

On the final night of the trip, we will enjoy a farewell dinner together as a group.  After dinner you will again have the opportunity to warm your bones in the hot pools back at the resort.

Overnight: Chipeta Solar Springs Resort in Ridgway

    Day 7, Oct 3rd: Departure
We recommend that you book a mid-afternoon return flight out of Montrose Regional Airport, which is about 1/2 hour away. We know, departures are always difficult. But you will leave with new friends, countless memories and memory cards packed with incredible photography.

A $1000 deposit is due at the time of registration. The balance will be due on June 27, 2021.
