  • Join Leica Store Miami for a photographic adventure to Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the remote Highlands and the Fagradalsfjall volcano. We'll head out in a modified 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter to explore this amazing country's endless natural beauty. Leica experts David Farkas and Peter Dooling from Leica Store Miami along with Icelandic photographer and expert guide Brynjar Ágústsson, will be on hand to give assistance and advice as you photograph Iceland’s iconic landscapes. This nine day photography trip to Iceland takes in the very best that the land of ice and fire has to offer.

Video from our August 2017 Leica Photo Adventure in Iceland

While other cameras are certainly allowed on this trip, the focus is on Leica camera systems and learning how to use them to their full potential. Current owners as well as those wanting to try Leica gear out for a week of real shooting are encouraged to attend. We’ll share our favorite tips and tricks so you can get the most out of this exceptional gear.

    Why this trip is different

This is not a workshop where you spend most of your daylight shooting hours sitting in a classroom. Why travel to some of the most beautiful and picturesque locations just to be stuck indoors? Instead, we will focus on making the most of each and every day to capture as many great photo opportunities as we can. Weather permitting, we will shoot as many sunrises and sunsets as we can. We will be covering a fair amount of ground each day with many stops along the way to get out, explore and shoot.

    What to Expect

    • Capture images of epic Icelandic landscapes as we travel to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the remote Highlands and the active Fagradalsfjall volcano.
    • Conditions permitting, search for the Northern Lights.
    • Chase the light and pack in as much photography as we can.
    • Enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded Leica enthusiasts in a small group setting.
    • Take a dip in Landmannalaugar’s natural hot spring (optional of course, but it's amazing!).
    • Receive in-field photography instruction, as well as 1-on-1 post-processing and critique sessions during downtime.

  • Dates:

    Friday, August 6 - Saturday, August 14, 2021

$6,295 - Double occupancy lodging (Single room available for $900)

We look forward to seeing you in Iceland!

    Day 1: Arrival

You will arrive at Iceland's Keflavik International Airport (KEF). After taking the mandatory PCR test at the airport, you can take the Flybus or a taxi to the Grand Hotel in the center of Reykjavik. At 6:00pm, we'll have a meet and greet in the hotel lobby and then enjoy a welcome dinner. We’ll spend the evening getting to know each other, and will take a closer look at the itinerary and adventure to come. We will spend the night in Reykjavik and rest well for our  morning departure. Accommodation: Grand Hotel Reykjavik

Day 2: Snæfellsnes Peninsula (Charming Fishing Villages)

We'll check out of our hotel in the morning, board our comfortable 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter and make our way to the fascinating Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland. We will spend two days in this awe-inspiring area surfing between the southern and northern sides of the peninsula. We will be photographing craggy rock formations and columnar basalt on the coast of Arnarstapi, a fishing village where ocean waves create a great interplay with light both day and night. You will be amazed by the huge lava field and windswept area at the picturesque Búdir hamlet where the glazed icecap of Snæfellsjokull Glacier makes a great backdrop for a scene with a little black church in the foreground. There are so many natural wonders and extraordinary vistas to be found throughout Snæfellsnes that it’s sometimes referred to as “Iceland in Miniature”. Accomodation: Fosshotel Stykkisholmur.

    Day 3:
    Snæfellsnes Peninsula (Majestic Natural Features)

Today you will continue your amazing exploration of Snæfellsnes discovering and photographing the outstanding beauty of the coastline which is dotted with small villages just a short distance from each other among lush fjords and steep mountains.  You will travel to visit the sight, Lóndrangar, the name for two ancient volcanic basalt plugs that rise out of the ocean along the shorefront. Their unusual shape provides a popular habitat for nesting birds of all kinds and their distinctive beauty makes excellent photo opportunities. Since days are long and nights are bright we will have many opportunities to shoot the famous mountain, Kirkjufell on the northern side of Snæfellsnes. Mt. Kirkjufell is considered to be one of Iceland's most beautiful mountains with its special cone-like shape and steep hills. The appearance of this photographer's favorite changes with the angle you observe it from, providing countless opportunities to get that perfect picture to add to your portfolio.  Accomodation: Fosshotel Stykkisholmur.

    Days 4 - 6: The Highlands

On day four we’ll leave Snæfellsnes and head east towards Iceland's remote Highlands. We'll stay three nights here and spend the much of our time exploring Landmannalaugar, a stunning, mountainous area in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve only accessible via 4x4. We’ll photograph rhyolite peaks, the area’s black lava fields and the mighty Hekla volcano that stands a little to the west. Although Hekla is an active volcano with a pretty ominous nickname (“Gateway to Hell”) the area’s multi-colored mountains and barren landscapes make it a photographer’s wonderland. We will talk you through everything you need to perfectly capture the many contrasting shapes, colors and textures.

We will visit amazing sights such as the crater lake of Blahylur, the waterfalls of Haifoss and Hjalparfoss, and the lake of Frostastadavatn. The magical crater lakes of Blahylur and Ljotipollur in Veidivotn are easily two of Iceland’s best kept secrets. Despite translating as “The Blue Puddle“ and “The Ugly Puddle” respectively, they are both a whole lot more breathtaking than their names suggest! Especially impressive is Ljotipollur, with its red sand slopes giving way to a cool blue pool. We'll spend plenty of time photographing the Haifoss waterfall. It’s known as “The Tall Falls” and is Iceland’s second-highest, with a torrent of water cascading down from a height of 122 meters. Haifoss falls down into a deep gorge on the Thjorsa glacier river, so there are plenty of spectacular angles, along with a watery haze, that we can use to create a perfect composition.

Another waterfall to discover in this part of Iceland’s highlands is the Hjalparfoss on the river Fossa. The unique, twin basalt structure means that the river is split into two for a matter of seconds before falling into a calm oasis. The whitewash of the falls gives a fantastic splash effect for our photographs, with the (hopefully) blue sky and rolling hills offering a wonderful backdrop. We will also get the chance to visit the highland region of Landmannalaugar. This area is one of the most popular and photogenic resorts in Iceland, with hot springs, natural baths, glittering rhyolite mountains, rock formations, lava fields and rich vegetation. We will take our time photographing the vast array of scenes, and there will be two specific visits that we will make to some of the famous local sites. The first is the ridge over Frostastadavatn lake, which offers wondrous views of the water and surrounding landscape. The second is Sigoldugljufur canyon, where countless waterfalls meet and fall together down the cliffs and into the river below. All that photography is hard work, so we’ll make sure there’s time for a visit to Landmannalaugar’s natural baths. Accommodation for these three nights:  Land Hotel

Day 7: Highlands to Reykjavik and the Fagradalsfjall Volcano

On this day, we'll photograph our way back to Reykjavik and prepare for an evening hike to the newly erupting Fagradalsfjall volcano (assuming that it's still active of course). This volcano hasn't erupted in nearly 800 years and it's surely a sight to behold. Depending on the weather, we hope to photograph the volcano at dusk and into sunset. The hike is approximately 3km (approximately 90 mins) each way on an easy dirt path.

Fagradalsfjall is a shield volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula, around 40 kilometres from Reykjavík, Iceland. Its highest summit is Langhóll. A volcanic eruption began on 19 March 2021 in Geldingadalir to the south of Fagradalsfjall, which is still emitting fresh lava as of 1 June 2021
The name is a compound of the Icelandic words fagur ("fair", "beautiful"), dalur ("dale", "valley") and fjall ("fell", "mountain"). The mountain massif is named after Fagridalur (or "beautiful valley") which is situated at its northwest.  The 2021 lava field is to be named Fagradalshraun. Accommodation: Grand Hotel Reykjavik

Day 8 - Golden Circle (Gulfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir)

After sleeping in a bit, we'll make out way to Iceland’s most famous route—the Golden Circle.

The first stop will be at the immensely powerful Gullfoss waterfall, where glacial water thunders across two tiers, plunging into a dramatic canyon below. There are a number of different compositions to be found here so you’ll have plenty of time to explore the area in detail.

Next, you’ll have an opportunity to immerse yourself in Iceland’s seething volcanic landscapes at the Geysir Geothermal Area. Aside from the exploding fountain geyser called Strokkur, the area is littered with steaming fumaroles, hot springs and bubbling mud pots.

Your final stop will be at Þingvellir, Iceland’s only mainland UNESCO World Heritage Site. The scenery here is captivating, and you’ll soon find out why. Located in a rift valley between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, there are incredible lava fields to photograph, ravines full of crystal clear spring water, as well as the small waterfall Oxararfoss surrounded by smooth rocks.

You’ll also have a spectacular view of Iceland’s largest natural lake, Þingvallavatn, which makes for a fantastic subject on a backdrop of mountains and bathed in the warmth of the Midnight Sun. Accommodation: Grand Hotel Reykjavik

    Day 9 - Departure

On day nine we will wake in Reykjavik and say our goodbyes. Unless you decide to spend more time in Iceland, you'll take a taxi or the FlyBus back to Keflavik International Airport, laden with memories, photographs, and photography tips from an unforgettable adventure.
