  • Join Leica Store Miami for a winter photography tour of the Lofoten Islands in Norway as we capture the magnificent northern lights in the most epic surroundings you can imagine. The Lofoten Islands are the jewel in Norway’s scenic crown, which is really saying something in a country renowned for its spectacular landscapes. This wild, untamed cluster of islands is a photographer's paradise; an imposing collection of jaw-dropping natural sights, jagged rock formations, and fairy tale views.

Leica experts David Farkas and Colin McKinley from Leica Store Miami, along with photographer and guide Christian Hoiberg, will be on hand to give assistance and advice as you photograph these unbelievable landscapes.

While other cameras are certainly allowed on this trip, the focus is on Leica camera systems and learning how to use them to their full potential. Current owners as well as those wanting to try Leica gear out for a week of real shooting are encouraged to attend. We’ll share our favorite tips and tricks so you can get the most out of this exceptional gear.

    Why this trip is different

At Leica Store Miami, we feel that real world shooting is the best way to discover the capabilities of your camera, grow as a photographer and enjoy the Leica experience. Our Leica-focused photo workshops offer you a one-of-a-kind opportunity to master your camera, try out the latest Leica gear and spend time with other Leica enthusiasts from all over the US and the world.

This is not a workshop where you spend most of your daylight shooting hours sitting in a classroom. Why travel to some of the most beautiful and picturesque locations just to be stuck indoors? Instead, we will focus on making the most of each and every day to capture as many great photo opportunities as we can.

    What to Expect

This is primarily a photography trip. We will be shooting some days from before sunrise until after sunset and even into the night as we search for the northern lights. At each carefully chosen location, there will be plenty of time to set up your tripod, compose your shots and get in some quality photography.

The weather and climate in northern Norway is renowned for being extremely unpredictable because of it’s many local weather systems. This means conditions can change within minutes and kilometers, also resulting in very dramatic light and photographic opportunities. Lofoten has a much milder climate than other parts of the world at a similar latitude, such as Greenland and Alaska. This is due to the temperature of the water of the Gulf Stream. The coastal climate results in mild winters and cool summer temperatures. Traditionally, January and February are the coldest months with an average high of 32 °F and an average low of 26 °F.

One of the goals of this workshop is to photograph the northern lights and we will do our best to make that happen. We can never predict weather and guarantee clear skies and brilliant displays of the this elusive phenomenon, but we will chase it for all it’s worth throughout the entire week.

  • Itinerary

The Lofoten Islands jut out from Norway’s northern shores, and appear to drift in the open waters of the Norwegian sea. But that doesn’t mean they are difficult to reach or travel around. They might seem pretty inhospitable, but all of the islands are actually connected by scenic road bridges and tunnels.

For the duration of this Lofoten Islands photography tour, we will be hunting down the aurora borealis and capturing the finest sights in the area. Epic snow-capped peaks, vivid fjords, charming villages and dramatic seascapes... all will be within our reach, and (hopefully!) illuminated by the magical glow of the northern lights. The Northern Lights are visible in Lofoten from September to April each year. Although they can be temperamental, we’ll do our best to put the group in the perfect position for an aurora photo shoot at each location. During this tour we will focus on the classic winter scenes around the islands. Below is a detailed overview of our expected itinerary.

Day 1 (Feb 2): Arrival in Leknes

The adventure begins when you arrive at Leknes Airport, where your photo guides will pick you up and take you to your cabin. You will stay in the same cabin during the whole tour.

You’ll then have time to rest before meeting with the rest of the group at 5pm for a delicious, welcoming meal. Over dinner, we’ll get to know one another better as we get acquainted and discuss the itinerary for the next few days. It’s a great time to learn more about the details of the tour and to ask your guides any questions that you might have.

Make sure to have your camera gear ready. If the Northern Lights make a display on this evening, then we may head out for our first shoot! We are located close to the famous beaches at Haukland and Utakleiv. At night it might be possible to shoot the incredible aurora borealis if the weather permits. Otherwise, we’ll try to have an early night so that you can be up bright and early to shoot in the morning.

Days 2 - 6 (Feb 3-7): Reine, Arctic Beaches and Beyond

Because of the fast changing Arctic weather in Lofoten, our itinerary is always adjusted to maximize your photography experience. Your photo guides, being local and expert in reading the weather systems, will make sure you are in the right place at the right time as you cover all the well known spots from Å in the south to Henningsvær in the north.

We will be exploring Reine, including the historical hamlet of Flakstad as well as the magnificent beaches of Fredvang on the outer coast of the Lofoten Islands, overlooking the Arctic Ocean. We’ll have an incredible array of photography opportunities at our fingertips, from the spectacular views of Nusfjord fishing village to the windswept vistas of Selfjord.

Lofoten is well-renowned for its scenic beaches, with their golden sands and turquoise water framed by majestic mountains all around.

Uttakleiv beach is a photographer’s dream with smooth coastal rocks harbouring jewel-toned tidal pools along a rocky coastline. It offers up a myriad of compelling compositions, night or day.

Nearby to Uttakleiv is its sister beach, Haukland. Voted Norway’s best beach, this stunning stretch of sand is as tranquil as it is photogenic. Framed by mountains on all sides, the conditions here can be very mild.

At Unstad, the swell can sometimes break with unimaginable power over the scattered boulders on the shore, making for great opportunities to practice wave painting at slightly longer exposures for interesting motion effects.

Meanwhile at Vareid, wild and changeable conditions make for stunning compositions, particularly with the rock pools in the foreground and romantic, jagged mountain peaks in the back.

During the evenings, we’ll continue our hunt for the Northern Lights along the shores of the fjords. The beaches make for wonderful locations to shoot the Northern Lights too. So as long as the weather is clear, we’ll spend our evenings roaming the shores in search of their elusive dance in the night sky!

    Day 7 (Feb 8): Departure
On day eight the group will depart from Leknes airport, which is about 15 minutes from our cabins. We know departures are always difficult, but you will leave with new friends, countless memories and memory cards packed with incredible photography.
