Leica S Photo Adventure: Monument Valley with Arizona Highways. Feb 8 - 13, 2014
Join us this winter for an unforgettable workshop in Monument Valley. Leica Store Miami has teamed up with Arizona Highways Magazine Photo Workshops to create a unique photographic adventure in the American Southwest. Home of red rocks and breathtaking geological features, Monument Valley provides endless photographic opportunities. Our guides will take us in off-road vehicles to hidden vantage points around the Valley, we’ll experience a Navajo sheep drive and even stop for local portraiture and native storytelling. All the while, you will use Leica’s top of the line Leica S medium format digital camera system. If you don’t have a Leica S, Leica Store Miami will provide loaner equipment for the duration of the 6-day workshop.
Upon arriving in Monument Valley, we will begin this week-long epic photo journey with a short drive along Highway 163 (Forrest Gump Hwy) where the setting sun will cast hues of red, orange and gold off the deep canyon walls at the Goosenecks of the San Juan River. From the moment you enter this sacred land, you will be immersed in the raw beauty and rich cultural surroundings of Navajo land. Ancient windswept mesas, grandiose rock formations, rippled sand dunes, gnarled juniper trunks and sandstone arches will provide an endless stream of extraordinary photos ops.
You will encounter traditional cultural activities, such as a silversmith or potter and photograph the beauty of the Navajo people in unique settings. Photographer/instructor, Jeff Kida, Photo Editor for Arizona Highways Magazine, along with Leica Store Miami S-System specialists will give photo enthusiasts an opportunity to expand their compositional creativity in this magnificent location while discovering the imaging power of the Leica S-System. Just steps from our base at The View Hotel, we will photograph the soft morning light and the golden glow of sunset at the Mittens, depart on a private tour to the Valley floor to capture images of the Totems and Yei Bei Chei and take aim of sweeping vistas from the North Window. We will catch the stunning view from John Ford's Point and make our way to "Ear of the Wind" where we will photograph a Navajo sheep drive before stopping for a visit to a traditional Hogan for Native portraits and Navajo storytelling. Between guided tours to the Valley floor and other striking locations such as the Pancakes, Honeymoon Arch and petroglyphs in Mystery Valley we will work in classroom settings to critique images and discuss equipment usage and questions.
As we wind down our trip and head back to Phoenix, we will take in one last iconic photo opportunity as we stop in Sedona for a late afternoon shoot at Cathedral Rock in Red Rock Crossing before our final dinner together and arrival into Phoenix. This workshop is geared towards current Leica owners, those wanting to try the S-System out for a week of real shooting or photographers who simply wish to experience the ultimate Monument Valley experience. The 37.5 megapixel Leica S features a sensor 60% larger than a full frame 35mm and provides vastly superior image quality. The S-System sets new standards in the world of medium format photography while providing the ruggedness and handling of a 35mm DSLR. This all inclusive workshop will give participants the opportunity to photograph some of the Southwest’s' most iconic landscapes using Leica’s flagship medium format digital camera.”
