Southwest Ireland Monochrom Workshop
Killary Fjord, Connemara National Park
Join Leica Store Miami and fine art photographer Richard Sexton for an all-inclusive 10 day workshop in scenic southwest Ireland. We'll journey to Cork, Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula, the Aran Islands, the Cliffs of Moher, Galway and more. Richard is a lifelong Leica photographer and a master of monochromatic printing. Leica specialist Peter Dooling from Leica Store Miami will be on hand to give assistance and advice and help you get the most out of your Leica.
Craggy coastlines, lush forests, quaint villages, prehistoric ruins, castles, rolling hillsides, lively pubs, all steeped in a rich, complex history, make Ireland the perfect location for a destination workshop, particularly for black and white photography.
For all Ireland’s beauty, the weather can be challenging. Sunny days are mixed with windy drizzle. A cloudy, foggy day in Ireland is a normal day. But for those working in black and white, if you brave the mist you can come away with some truly dramatic, atmospheric imagery. This is the beauty of black and white photography: It is more subjective, more interpretive. And it requires a certain vision, an ability to interpret a reality rendered only through shades of gray. Light and shadow is the language of the image.
Black and white photography is not easy, nor is it merely color photography absent the color. It is a separate, challenging medium and Ireland is the perfect proving ground.

While other cameras (and color cameras) are certainly allowed on this trip, the focus is on the Leica Monochrom and learning how to get the most out of it. Current owners as well as those wanting to learn more about black and white photography are encouraged to attend.

Why this trip is different
As a digital camera devoted solely to black and white capture, the Leica Monochrom produces files with an analog character and subject rendering that cannot be replicated by any color digital camera. It is a specialized photographic instrument that requires a unique approach when it comes to:
- Capture: Learn a unique way of seeing the world in black and white employing previsualization and a commitment to black and white imaging before the fact, rather than after.
- Color Filters: Learn how to use color filters to transpose color values to shades of grey which can improve your images at the time of capture.
- Post Production: Using Adobe Lightroom to optimize the grayscale raw file.

Day 1 - Arrival, Adare and Killarney
Arrive at Shannon Airport and meet with your experienced Irish driver/guide who will transfer you to a nearby hotel for a welcome breakfast (arrivals prior to 9.00am). Feeling suitably refreshed, start your journey to the popular town of Killarney stopping at one of the prettiest villages in Ireland, Adare. Walk along the main street which is lined with thatched roofed cottages or visit the old priory and monastery before departing for Killarney. After checking in to the 4-star Lake Hotel, you may want to explore the town or just enjoy the scenery from your hotel right on the lakeshore of Lough Lein, Killarney’s lower lake, with magnificent mountain and woodland views. We'll meet for a welcome dinner in the hotel lobby at 6pm.

Day 3 - Dingle Peninsula
Dingle PeninsulaFollowing breakfast your coach will take you around the Dingle Peninsula. Perhaps not as well-known as the Iveragh Peninsula where the Ring of Kerry is located, the Dingle Peninsula is less busy but every bit as beautiful. The town of Dingle is a small fishing port where you will find plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants to have lunch. Then to the west of the town the scenery is particularly rugged with views out to the formerly inhabited Blasket Islands. Visit the Blasket Center which celebrates the story of the Blasket Islanders, the unique literary achievements of the island writers and their native language, culture and tradition. Sadly An Blascaod Mór was abandoned in 1953 as a result of the decline of its once vibrant population. Return to Killarney where the remainder of the day will be at leisure.

Day 4 - Ring of Kerry
Killarney National ParkToday you will discover the wonderful scenery as you drive around the famous Ring of Kerry. The road winds between the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Ireland's highest mountains, and the varied Atlantic coast. You will be amazed at the breathtaking views and you will stop for photos at the most dramatic scenes and at the Skellig Experience that tells the story of the monks that lived on the Skellig Islands. Skellig Michael was recently used as a location in the final scene of Star Wars – The Force Awakens. Continue around and visit Valentia Island, Derrynane House, Portmagee and much more. Travel through the remote villages of Cahirciveen and Waterville – one of Charlie Chaplin’s favourite places – and pass through the colourful village of Sneem and pause at Moll's Gap to view the Three Lakes of Killarney.

Day 6 - Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and Galway
Enjoy an early breakfast at your hotel and board your coach to travel to County Clare crossing the Shannon Estuary by ferry. Once in Clare, enjoy the scenery as you travel to one of Ireland’s natural wonders, the Cliffs of Moher. The cliffs rise to 214 meters (702 ft.) at the visitor centre where the views are magnificent. Following the visit and lunch (not included) travel through the karst like landscape of the Burren, where there will be several stops for photo shoots. Finally, we'll arrive and check-in at the 4-star Park House Hotel in central Galway.Galway

Then drive through the picturesque countryside to Killaloe, which was once the capital city during Brian Boru’s reign as Ireland’s High King. Take a one hour cruise on Lough Derg and take in the magnificent scenery and wildlife and enjoy a commentary of its heritage, legend and folklore.
