Stella Johnson Workshop: Seeing Miami

Join the Leica Akademie and Leica Store Miami for a three day “Learning to See” workshop with Master photographer Stella Johnson.

This workshop will help students learn to see and photograph the extraordinary in their ordinary, everyday experiences. You will learn to make compelling images within one city block, your own backyard or traveling to these locations around the world.  We will be looking at light, composition, color, texture and moment while photographing interior and exterior landscapes. Students will learn to see light and the city of Miami in a new way. The class will participate in two critique sessions, enhancing your ability to look at and talk about what makes a strong image so interesting.

Friday, March 6 (location in Miami - TBD)
2:00pm - 6:00pm: Introductions, meet and greet and presentation.

Saturday, March 7 (location in Miami - TBD)
10:00am – 5:00pm: Shooting and classroom sessions.

Sunday, March 8 (Leica Store Miami)
10:00am - 5:00pm: Shooting and classroom sessions.

This workshop is open to all levels of photographers who are keen to grow their skill set.

*A Leica Camera is not required for this class.  Students must have a basic or intermediate operational knowledge of their camera.  An assortment of Leica Cameras will be available on loan to try out.


Enrollment is limited to 12 participants. Students will be asked to bring a selection of images or prints for review with Stella on Friday.

The workshop cost $799.

Stella Johnson is a photographer and educator known for her passionate and honest documentary projects. She received a Core Fulbright Scholar Grant to photograph in Mexico in 2003, and Fulbright Senior Specialist grants to teach in Mexico in 2006 and in Colombia in 2018. The University of Maine Press published her monograph, Al Sol: Photographs from Mexico, Cameroon and Nicaragua in 2008. Johnson’s photographs have been widely exhibited in the United States and internationally.
A dedicated educator, Johnson holds teaching positions at Boston University and Lesley University College of Art and Design. She also teaches workshops in Greece, Cuba, and Mexico. She was a 2013 finalist for the Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship, Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50, and a nominee for the Boston Foundation’s Brother Thomas Fellowship. Johnson’s work has received numerous honors including a New England Foundation for the Arts Cultural Collaborative
Artist-in-Residence Grant and Julia Margaret Cameron Award.
Johnson holds a BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute and an MS in Journalism from Boston University. Her work is held in public collections including The DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, The Haggerty Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Portland Museum of Art, and The Southeast Museum of Photography, among others.
