This was the first apochromatically corrected lens to be introduced commercially for the Leica system. It was based on one of the series of lenses designed in the late 1960's by Dr. Walter Mandler at Midland, Canada to meet a requirement by the U.S. Navy for a high resolution camera system based on the Leicaflex SL. According to Lager there were three special apochromatic Elcan-R lenses produced for this contract: 75mm, 180mm, and 450mm. The 180mm is a telephoto design with seven elements with six of them in cemented pairs. The design relies on Leitz High refractive index and low dispersion glasses. The long slim barrel with built in extensible lens hood balances well on the camera body. The filter size was changed from series 7.5 to E60 about 1980, but earlier lenses up to No. 2,947,024 can be converted to E55. Lens manufactured between 1975 to 1997. This lens can be fitted with electronics for Leica R8.
