  • Northern Ireland Monochrom Workshop (Recce)

Join Leica Store Miami and fine art photographer Richard Sexton for an all-inclusive, 10-day Monochrom workshop through the captivating landscapes and rich history of Northern Ireland. Our journey will take us from the vibrant streets of Dublin and Belfast to the rugged coastlines of Bushmills, the walled city of Derry, and the wild beauty of Donegal — with countless hidden gems along the way. This thoughtfully curated experience will blend the region's complex history with its natural wonders and cultural landmarks, offering stunning photographic opportunities at iconic sites such as the Giant's Causeway, the Dark Hedges, Glenveagh National Park, Grainan Aileach, Dunluce Castle, and the soaring Slieve League Cliffs. Whether you're drawn to the dramatic scenery, ancient ruins, or the fascinating history of this part of the country, this workshop promises both inspiration and adventure at every turn.

Richard Sexton, a lifelong Leica photographer and a master of monochromatic photography and printing, will be our instructor. Mark Lyons will be our guide, driver and location expert. Leica specialist Peter Dooling from Leica Store Miami will be your trip organizer and will give assistance and advice and help you get the most out of your Leica.

As this is a recce trip, we'll essentially do a first run of the planned itinerary and explore this amazing country with open minds and a spirit of adventure. We’ll have a framework of destinations/activities, but we’ll take each day as it comes and adjust to weather, shooting opportunities, etc.

Craggy coastlines, lush forests, quaint villages, cosmopolitan cities, prehistoric ruins, castles, rolling hillsides, lively pubs, all steeped in a rich, complex history, make Ireland the perfect location for a destination workshop, particularly for black and white photography. This style of photography is not easy, nor is it merely color photography absent the color. It is more subjective, more interpretive. And it requires a certain vision, an ability to interpret a reality rendered only through shades of gray. Light and shadow is the language of the image. It is a separate, challenging medium and Ireland is the perfect proving ground.

While other cameras (and color cameras) are certainly allowed on this trip, the focus is on Leica Monochrom cameras and learning how to get the most out of them. Current owners as well as those wanting to learn more about monochrom photography are encouraged to attend.

  • Why this trip is different

As digital cameras devoted solely to black and white capture, Leica Monochroms produce files with an analog character and subject rendering that cannot be replicated by any color digital camera. They are specialized photographic instruments that require a unique approach when it comes to:

    • Capture: Learn a unique way of seeing the world in black and white employing pre-visualization and a commitment to black and white imaging before the fact, rather than after.
    • Color Filters: Learn how to use color filters to transpose color values to shades of grey which can improve your images at the time of capture.
    • Post Production: Using Adobe Lightroom to optimize the grayscale raw file.

    Monday, August 11 - Wednesday, August 20, 2025
