  • The Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 “Rigid” (often referred to as Version 1, produced around 1956–1968, with early examples from 1958) is one of the most iconic standard lenses in Leica’s M-system history. Built during a time when Leica prioritized mechanical precision above all else, the “Rigid” nickname comes from its solid, non-collapsible barrel design—a departure from the earlier collapsible Summicron that preceded it.

This lens is revered for its classic rendering: at wider apertures, it delivers a gentle softness with a subtle glow that flatters portraits and adds a timeless character to images. Stopped down, it sharpens up considerably, offering excellent detail and contrast for its era. The transition from focus to out-of-focus areas is particularly smooth, producing a natural, pleasing bokeh that many modern lenses try—often unsuccessfully—to replicate.

Optically, the Rigid Summicron features a 6-element, 4-group double-Gauss design, which became the foundation for decades of Leica 50mm lens development. Coatings were relatively simple by today’s standards, contributing to its slightly lower contrast and susceptibility to flare—but also to the signature vintage look that collectors and shooters seek out.

Handling is pure Leica: the all-metal construction feels dense and purposeful, with a beautifully damped focusing ring and a precise aperture ring with firm, positive detents. It pairs perfectly with M film bodies and adapts seamlessly to digital M cameras, where it brings a distinct analog character to modern sensors.

Today, the Summicron-M “Rigid” V1 is prized not only as a collectible piece of Leica history but also as a highly usable creative tool. It appeals to photographers who value character over clinical perfection—those looking to add a classic Leica signature to their work with a lens that helped define it.
