Leica Store Miami has partnered with Explora Hotels to offer a unique, small group recce adventure to one of the most remote regions on Earth. From the otherworldly desert landscapes of Chile to the surreal salt flats of Bolivia, this Travesía Atacama Uyuni takes you on a journey of contrasts. We'll travel from the driest desert in the world to the high plains of the Altiplano, and immerse ourselves in the diverse landscapes of this remarkable region. During this adventure, we will cross the desert in 4×4 vehicles, led by expert Explora guides and local drivers. We'll go out each day in search of amazing photography locations and, on most nights, we'll have the chance to capture the milky way under incredibly clear skies!
As this is a recce trip, we'll essentially do a first run of the itinerary and explore these amazing regions of Chile and Bolivia with open minds and a spirit of adventure. We’ll have a framework of destinations/activities, but we’ll take each day as it comes and adjust to weather, shooting opportunities, etc.
For an interesting perspective on this journey, take a look at this Travel & Leisure article from last year.About Explora Hotels
Explora crafts in-depth explorations and nomadic journeys in South America’s most remote corners, using award winning lodges as bases from which to go deeper into each territory, and using exploration journeys to drive conservation. Their lodges in Atacama, Ramaditas, Chituca and Uyuni will act as our home bases as we explore the unique landscapes and places of the Altiplano. This adventure offers a profound connection with the environment and insights into the unique heritage of these lands.
Explora has been traveling the desert and the Altiplano between these two countries for over 15 years and has the necessary equipment and infrastructure to ensure safety to travelers. The vehicles used for the Atacama & Uyuni Travesía support satellite communication systems, VHF radio, satellite navigation system (GPS), and oxygen. Guides, on the other hand, have Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification that endorses their knowledge and skills to aid people in remote areas.

Fitness & climate
Because of the altitude (over 14,000 feet in certain locations) and hiking involved in this journey, it is essential that you are actively fit and healthy. While there are no scheduled long hikes, the altitude makes everything seem more difficult. All hiking will be done at a relaxed pace, as we will have plenty of time to get to our locations.
We will be traveling through high elevation deserts on this trip and the temperatures can feel very warm during the day (80s°F), and quite cold at night (30s°F). It is very important to stay hydrated on this trip due to the altitude, low humidity and intense sun. A quality sun hat, UV protective clothing and warm clothing for the evenings are recommended.
Travel Insurance (required)
Due to the remote location visited during this trip, it is a requirement of booking that guests provide evidence of comprehensive travel insurance to cover cancellation and curtailment, medical and emergency expenses (including evacuation), personal accident, injury, etc.
Getting there
You'll need Santiago de Chile International Airport (SCL), and take an approximately 2-hour connection flight to the northern city of Calama (CJC). We advise you to book an early flight in order to be able to relax at the hotel and participate in an easy exploration during the afternoon. You will be picked up from Calama airport and driven to Explora Atacama Lodge (1.5 hours).
Departure
As this is a one way traverse from Chile to Bolivia. On day 8, we will fly from International Joya Andina Airport (UYU) in Uyuni to La Paz (LPB), spend the night and catch an international flight from there on May 12th. However if you wish to travel back to Calama, Chile for departure, Explora can arrange a transfer on the morning of May 11th (about an 8 hour drive).Pre & post trip add-ons
The Explora team can arrange visits to any of their other destinations in South America if you are interested.

Itinerary
Days 1 - 3 (May 4, 5 & 6): Atacama
Once you arrive at Calamas Airport in Chile (CJC), you will be met by a driver and taken to the Explora Atacama Lodge. You can relax or schedule an excursion (biking, horse back riding, etc.) and we'll meet at 6:00pm for a meet and greet, drinks and dinner. *We recommend arriving at least a day early, on May 3rd, for this trip just in case there are any travel or weather delays. Explora can help you to book the additional room night should you wish.
Explora's lodge is located in the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, on the beautiful Ayllu de Larache, at about 2400 meters above sea level. San Pedro is a beautiful adobe town, once inhabited by ancient Atacameño people, and surrounded by the desert’s most dramatic features: salt-flats, volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, windswept sand dunes and more. We'll spend the next few days exploring this landscape and night sky above. Some of highlights in this region are the Valle de la Luna, Atacama salt flat, the Salt mountain range, Rainbow valley, Chulaco ravine, oasis San Pedro, Tatio geyers, Domeyko Mountain, the Puritama Nature Reserve and the Altiplano zone.
Explora Atacama offers a thoughtfully curated menu by Virgilio Martínez, the acclaimed chef behind Central in Lima—recognized as one of the best restaurant in the world—and MIL in Cusco. Experience the distinctive flavors and culinary traditions of the region, crafted with the expertise of one of the world’s top chefs.Accommodation: Explora Atacama Lodge
Days 4 - 8 (May 7, 8, 9 & 10): Ramaditas, Chituca & Uyuni
This morning, after breakfast, the group will load up our 4x4 vehicles and make our way north towards the Uyuni salt flats. The road that connects San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile and the Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia is a transit area with thousands of years of history. It has been traveled by native Andean peoples since nomadic times, as they sought food and raw materials.
On our journey, we'll stop for one night at Explora's Ramaditas lodge (4145 meters above sea level), one night at Chituca lodge (3732 meters above sea level) and two nights at Uyuni lodge (3729 meters above sea level). You will have unique experiences every day, as you travel from lodge to lodge. We'll make plenty of photography stops along the way, taking recommendations from our guides, and seeing where the road takes us. We'll settle in each evening after sunset for dinner and perhaps an astrophotography session.
These small mountain lodges were built in cooperation with the Bolivian communities in the region. Authentic people who have dedicated their lives to cultivating knowledge of their territories. You will have authentic experiences at each of these lodges, as they are served by locals.
The views from these lodges are unparalleled and, opposed to large disruptive hotels, these 4-6 room structures seek to interfere with the landscape as little as possible. Finally, the cuisine was developed by the chefs of Ancestral, a famous restaurant in La Paz, Bolivia, and reflects the region’s ingredients and recipes.
Day 8 (May 11): Uyuni to La Paz
This morning you will bid farewell to your guides, staff and drivers as we'll fly from Uyuni to La Paz. Once we arrive and check-in at our hotel, we'll go on a guided tour of La Paz, taking in some of the city's highlights. We'll convene for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant this evening and discuss the amazing journey we've just had.
Accommodation: Met Hotel, La Paz
Day 9 (May 12): DepartureThis will be our final day in Bolivia unless you decide to extend your stay. The airport is roughly 10 miles away and the hotel includes an airport shuttle or you may wish to take a taxi.
