Join Leica Store Miami for an incredible photography adventure to the Scotland's Outer Hebrides and the Highlands. This magical part of the world is home to some of Scotland's most iconic landscapes including amazing beaches, soaring mountains, misty glens, picturesque villages, historic castles and more. We'll spend our days searching for the best light while visiting locations like the Callanish Standing Stones, the Mangersta Sea stacks, Lusketyre Beach and more!
The Isles of Harris and Lewis (actually one geographical island) are one of the most isolated parts of the UK. It’s the lack of commercialism which is one of the island’s main attractions and provides its unique atmosphere and charm. With world-class beaches, stunning sea stacks, natural arches, mountains, castles and ancient stone circles, the island has enough subjects to keep any photographer happy for days. Meanwhile, Scotland's famous Highlands offer an abundance of mountain views, glens, lochs and castles.
Local photographers/guides Ruth Taylor and Alex Trowski, along with Leica expert David Farkas from Leica Store Miami, will be with you every step of the way to give assistance and advice.
While other cameras are certainly allowed on this trip, the focus is on Leica camera systems and learning how to use them to their full potential. Current owners as well as those wanting to try Leica gear out for a week of real shooting are encouraged to attend. We’ll share our favorite tips and tricks so you can get the most out of this exceptional gear. Why this trip is different
This is not a workshop where you spend most of your daylight shooting hours sitting in a classroom. Why travel to one of the most beautiful and picturesque locations in the world just to be stuck indoors? Instead, we will focus on making the most of each and every day to capture as many great photo opportunities as we can. Of course our Leica specialists and guides are always available to provide assistance in the field, photo review and post processing instruction so just let us know!
What to ExpectOn this photography trip, we will make our way from the Isle of Lewis and Harris to Scotland's majestic Highlands. We will be covering a fair amount of ground each day with many stops along the way to get out, explore and shoot.
Because the weather in northern Scotland can be very unpredictable, our itinerary may change from day to day. The clouds and rain can roll in on a clear day and provide very dramatic light and amazing photographic opportunities. Temperatures usually range from the high 50’s to the mid 40's in early October, but can go as low as the high 30’s.
Getting There
This photo adventure will begin at the Royal Hotel in Stornoway (on the Isle of Lewis) at Noon on Saturday, October 18th. You'll need to fly into Stornoway Airport (SYY) on or before October 18th via Logan Air from either Edinburgh (EDI - once daily) or Glasgow (GLA - twice daily). Upon arrival, you can take a taxi (or here) into Stornoway (about a 9 minute drive).
*As with all of our international trips, we recommend arriving a day early to avoid any travel/weather delays. In this case, that would be Friday, October 17th.
Logan Air uses small prop planes so there’s very little room for carry-on luggage. The carry on weight limit is 6kg (13lbs) but they will offer “valet service” for your photo bags (the bags will be hand loaded into the plane from the tarmac). So we suggest only bringing a smaller bag onboard (a shoulder bag, a laptop bag, or a small backpack). The checked luggage limit is between 23kg (50lbs) and 30kg (66lbs), depending on your chosen class.
You can plan to depart out of Edinburgh International Airport (EDI) anytime on or after October 27th.

Itinerary
Saturday, October 18: Meetup and Welcome Dinner
This photo adventure will begin at the Royal Hotel in Stornoway (on the Isle of Lewis) at Noon on this day. You'll need to fly into Stornoway Airport (SYY) via Logan Air from either Edinburgh (EDI - once daily) or Glasgow (GLA - twice daily). Upon arrival, you can take a taxi (or here) into Stornoway, which is about a 9 minute drive.
After we've had our introductions and loaded the vans, we'll photograph our way down to the Isle of Harris. We'll check-in to the Hotel Hebrides, our home for the next 3 nights, and then gather for a welcome dinner.October 19 - 21: Explore Isle of Harris
To start this workshop, we'll be based on the Isle of Harris which will allow us to explore the southern end of the islands more easily. We'll follow the light and chase dramatic scenes, sunrises and sunsets. We'll visit a picturesque lighthouse on the island of Scalpay. Wild seas and dramatic light are what we’ll be hoping for, but this place also works against blue skies and there are few places better than this one to sit on the hillside with a packed lunch in the sunshine. During our stay on Harris, we’ll head to one of the most photographed beaches in the world - Lusketyre, where we’ll have the final few hours of the day to explore the dunes and capture the changing light as the sun dips towards the western horizon.October 22-24: Explore Isle of Lewis
Today, we'll make our way to the Isle of Lewis, eventually checking in to the Royal Hotel, where we'll spend the next 3 nights. Once you're settled in, we will head out to photograph the island, ending in either a sunset shoot on the rugged western coast or shooting some of the abandoned houses which are scattered about the islands.
We'll shoot sunrise at Garry Beach, which is an idyllic golden sandy bay with rugged seas stacks standing like huge chess pieces. At high tide we’ll be able to get long exposures of the waves lapping around the base of the stacks, but at low tide we can walk all the way around them and find different angles to work with. It’s then back to the hotel for breakfast and a morning rest before heading out for the rest of the day, starting with a visit to a historic village of traditional thatched cottages nestled in a remote cove on the rugged northern shore.
We’ll then shoot a 2000 year old broch (communal house) which is beautifully situation among rolling hills and lochs, before heading to our evening location at Mangersta Sea Stacks - one of the most impressive coastal views in the UK. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment with both short and long exposures as the waves pound against the rocks below your elevated vantage point.
No visit would be complete with out a visit to one of the world’s most complete and photogenic standing stone circles, the Callanish Stone Circle. This one is a mere 5000 years old and we’ll be in position to hopefully capture it in silhouette with a colorful sky behind it, and then as the first light hits the stones and brings them to life. Then it’s back to the hotel for breakfast and a morning rest.
October 25-26: The Highlands
Today we head to the Highlands via a two hour ferry. We won’t know the timing of this ferry until closer to the trip, so it is not possible to plan the day just yet. However, if the ferry is in the morning, then we will leave after breakfast and have an afternoon session in the Highlands. If the ferry is in the afternoon, then we will make use of our final morning on Lewis by exploring more photogenic locations. When we arrive in the Highlands, we will check-in to the Glengarry Castle Hotel, where we'll stay for the next two nights.
As we'll be situated in the heart of the Highlands, we’ll have a wide range of locations to explore. From the shores of Loch Ness to the stunning fall colors of Glen Affric, both of which offer a stark change to what will have been witnessed so far in this trip. Even the hotel grounds themselves are worthy of spending a couple of hours wandering around with your camera.Sunday, October 26th: Highlands and Edinburgh
After one last morning shoot, we'll head back to the hotel for breakfast before checking out and starting our journey to Edinburgh. This is about a three hour drive, but we will stop at a couple of popular photo spots to stretch the legs and exercise those trigger fingers.
Once we've checked in to the Dakota Hotel in Queensferry, we'll settle in and end the trip with a farewell dinner where we can recount the events of the previous week’s adventures.Monday, October 27: DepartureOn day nine we will wake in Edinburgh and say our goodbyes. After breakfast, you can take a short taxi from our hotel to Edinburgh Airport or perhaps stay a few more days to explore Scotland.
