PASSING FANCIES documents the journey of veteran photographer Louis Jay as he crisscrosses the continents to observe and record life in a few of his favorite places. Wandering the streets of Paris, the Amalfi Coast, Rio, and Miami, he captures fleeting moments in cafes and overlooked corners; on park benches and beaches; in cemeteries and churches — always finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. Louis’s multi-year road trip unfolds in 64 starkly beautiful black-and-white images that incite wonder and reveal his enduring and intimate relationships with these locales.

LOUIS JAY’S photography career has spanned more than 40 years. He studied photography at London’s Harrow College of Art and with Lisette Model at Parsons School of Design in New York City before attending New York University Graduate Film Institute. After a brief career as an assistant cameraman on TV commercials and independent films, he opened a photography studio in New York and became an advertising photographer. Louis relocated to Rio de Janeiro in 1986, where he shot ads, record covers, and editorial portraits for Interview magazine. During these years, he continued photographing his personal projects of life and people in urban settings, resulting in two one-man shows in New York (Cafeteria Portraits) and Rio (The Lapa Exhibit). He moved his studio to Miami’s Design District in 1991 and retired from commercial work in 2011. Louis now photographs for himself and lives in Miami and Paris. Passing Fancies is his first book. www.louisjay.com
