The first version of the Summilux-M 50mm had a short production run from 1959 to 1961 before being replaced by the legendary second version, which remained in production from 1961 until 1995. Interestingly, the lens' physical design remained unchanged for the first few years, and Leica did not publicly disclose the updated optical formula until later in the 1960s.
Featured here is a version 2 Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4, Leica catalog number 11114, from the first year of production in 1961. It features a silver chrome brass barrel, knurled focus ring, and click stops only at marked aperture settings—hallmarks of these early examples. Wide open, the lens produces a magical, character-rich rendering, and even stopped down, it maintains a distinct signature that is highly sought after by both collectors and photographers. The minimum focus distance is 1 meter, and the lens accepts E43 (43mm) filters.
This particular example is in superb condition for a 64-year-old lens. The barrel shows only a few faint scuffs—typical of careful use—but has no scratches, dents, or dings. More importantly, the optics are free of fungus, haze, and cleaning marks, with only a few tiny dust specks that do not affect performance.
Following a CLA service by DAG Camera in November 2024, the focus is now silky smooth and well-weighted, and the aperture ring clicks firmly into place at each setting.
Included with the lens is a Leica 12586 lens hood, a Leica 14163 lens cap that fits over the hood when reversed, a modern rear lens cap, and an aftermarket 43mm front lens cap (handy to use when you're not mounting the hood).
A 30-day Leica Store Miami warranty is included.
