Leica Women Foto Project Summit: Miami

The Leica Store Miami collaborated with the Leica Women Foto Project and Leica Camera USA to host a three-day Summit. Alongside a gallery exhibition featuring LWFP awardees Eli Farinango and Greta Rico, the weekend included panel discussions, Leica Lounges, a mini portrait workshop and a photo slam.

Featured artists and guest speakers included Leica Women Foto Project awardees Eli Farinango and Greta Rico, Foto Feminas founder Veronica Sanchis, WOPHA founder and director Aldeide Delgado, and local Leica photographers Maggie Steber, María Martínez-Cañas and Ashlyn McKibben.

The Summit opened with a gallery opening and cocktail reception, with work by Eli Farinango, Greta Rico, Ashlyn McKibben, Maggie Steber and Nuri Ducassi.

Leica Lounge with Eli Farinango: Wilkay. Leica Women Foto Project awardee Eli Farinango shared her winning project Wilkay, where she explores the vastness and beauty of the healing journey through her documentary photography, exploring the spaces to reclaim ancestral memory through image-making and collaborative processes. Eli describes her project as "Wilkay is my personal narrative that speaks on the resiliency of the heart and spirit. I share my story of transforming and healing from the abuse I’ve experienced at different times in my life and the realities of being an indigenous woman in a patriarchal colonial society. In Kichwa, Wilkay means altar, and the process of creating this body of work is a ceremonial experience that weaves in my own spiritual practice, ancestral memory and my search for empowerment outside of the limitations placed on my body."

Round Table Discussion: Self Portraiture & Photography as Healing. Photographers Eli Farinango, María Martínez-Cañas and Ashlyn McKibben discussed how photography can be used as a form of healing and how they have incorporated self portraiture into their work to tell their own story.

Women's Portrait Workshop Session with Ashlyn McKibben & Leica On Loan. A hands-on portrait workshop created by women, for women and femme identifying people, exploring portraiture and self-portraiture and its importance in photography. It began with an inspiration hour dissecting the portrait and self-portrait, followed by a self-portrait session and a portrait session in which participants partnered up and photographed each other.

Brunch Edition Leica Lounge with Greta Rico and Veronica Sanchis. A conversational Leica Lounge with Leica Women Foto Project awardee Greta Rico and Foto Feminas founder Veronica Sanchis about Greta's award-winning project Substitute Mother. Inspired by the artist’s own family history, Mexican documentary photographer Greta Rico’s harrowing and illuminating project, Substitute Mother, tells the story of her cousin Siomara, who became a “Substitute Mother“ to her 3-year-old niece following her mother’s murder. This project shows how femicide does not end with murder, but has psychosocial impacts that cause trauma in orphan children, in mothers, sisters, grandmothers and aunts who become “Substitute Mothers“ due to violence.

Round Table Discussion: Women in the Photo Industry. A conversational-style panel with featured photographers and editors, including Maggie Steber, Greta Rico, Veronica Sanchis of Foto Feminas and Aldeide Delgado of WOPHA, on the role of women in the photo industry and the challenges they face.

Photo Slam. Audience-submitted photos were critiqued by a panel of distinguished photographers including María Martínez-Cañas, Maggie Steber and Aldeide Delgado.
