Peru: Real People

Inti Pachurin

Says Inti of his project, “Since 2010 I have traveled throughout Peru photographing indigenous people in thousand of miles of Peruvian forest, desert, and Peruvian Andes. In the process I have reconnected with my Inca heritage and taken the name Inti Pachurin. In Quechua, the language of the Inca people, it means the Son of the Sun. As I met people I became deeply aware that the cultures were changing and might soon disappear. Pollution and climate change are affecting their sources of food. Fish disappearing from waters and the forest is getting smaller.

The Boras, an indigenous tribe, largely settled in permanent forest settlements, have an elaborate knowledge, and hold a complex and important interest, in life of plants. To them there's no distinction between the spiritual and physical worlds.

The Huanchaco Fishermen. 19 year old Gustavo Castilla from the Mochica community, wants to continue a tradition that utilizes Caballitos de Totora, a reed watercraft used by his ancestors. But industrialized fishing and coral erosion are endangering his ambition, and the younger generations have no other choice than to take jobs in different fields.

The inhabitants of Santa Fe and Chaupewasi, two communities so tiny that can't even be found on a map, and can only be detected by GPS, are the two places where alpacas are kept in herds on the heights of the Peruvian Andes, over 15,419 ft. above sea level.

For the Quinoa Farmers of Warochiri, Lima, the popularity of quinoa has come as a mixed blessing. Although they have profited by an increase in demand the fluctuation of prices in the world market has limited its availability locally and its local price has risen dramatically.

Yet in spite of the difficulties the people have pure souls, and are unpretentious. They are Peru: Real People. Photography has helped me connect to my roots and to learn the value of life and its simple pleasures. Taking pictures sets me free, that is everything for me.”
