Strangers
Says Cruz about his exhibition, Strangers: "I have been creating and compiling "Strangers" for nearly two decades. It is a collection of photographs that I capture during my experiences throughout the world, as I go out to explore the streets through my camera. The collection has a distinctly stylized visual language that draws on mystery while enhancing the most refined aspects of my "Strangers". I am intrigued by enigmatic details, shapes, and shadows that inspire a story from a single frame. This ongoing project brought me back to basics, and where I started - just me and my camera. Working this way forced me to really see the world around me; it forced me to look for the shot, instead of creating it. It became a personal obsession to find the beauty in the dark, the beauty in the blacks. Looking back, I can now understand that the project was really born out of my love affair with shadows and silence, and it became the visual manifestation of my search for solitude."
