The Fence
The Fence, which is comprised both of still images and video, won a 2015 World Press Award. Leica Store Miami was the first gallery to exhibit the still photographs from The Fence.
The border the United States shares with Mexico is nearly 2,000 miles long and is comprised of numerous natural and man-made barriers. The construction of the fence, the most significant man-made barrier in North America, started in 2006, has cost more than 3 billion dollars and spans around 700 miles (1,126 km).
This multimedia project, made in June 2014, follows the residents, border patrol agents and immigrants who pass back and forth across the border every day. It explores their feelings about the fence and investigates what it has achieved as an instrument of immigration reform. Ommanney's work provides a unique perspective on the immigration debate through a conceptual exploration of the economic, political, environmental, and humanitarian costs of the construction of this fence.
