Mike Butler
How do you fit an elephant through the front door of a hotel lobby? That is a good metaphor for the complexities of shooting and lighting exceptionally large structures or spaces, quite often with a very small crew. In this case the elephant is the finished image void of HDR, multiple exposure stacking or some other digital workaround, and the lobby my client’s hands.
Mike is an architectural photographer who is known for these major lighting productions, essentially getting an elephant through the front door. He has been interviewed by PDN, Rangefinder as well as written for Shutterbug magazine regarding these productions and lighting techniques. These productions seamlessly bring together multiple disciplines within photography merging them into a single finished piece, each which can take up to 12 hours of on location work.
The talk covered in broad strokes the rationale, concepts and execution of these major productions, with a few case studies from beginning to end showing how each production comes together and how, with limited budgets and crew, to maximize efficiency on the shoot. It offered a glimpse into the inner workings of a commercial architectural photographer.
